La forma correcta es WERE. Punto.
Ahora, como pasa en todos los idiomas, hay deformaciones que terminan siendo aceptadas, porque es inútil combatirlas. Una de esas,en inglés, es usar WAS en el subjuntivo.

si buscás "if he was" te da como 9 millones más de resultados que si buscás "if he were".
